The majority of decks built today are made of wood. The main reason is the difference in initial cost between building a wood deck compared to a composite deck.

The primary reason for building a deck made from composite materials is for the low maintenance required. Even though all wood naturally weathers to a gray color, it should be cleaned and re-stained every two to three years to keep it looking its best.

The long term costs between the two types of materials may not be all that much different depending on who does the maintenance on your deck. If the homeowner has a professional firm do the cleaning and re-staining then over time the costs of ownership will be similar.
